Shaun Pollock, the media representative for the ICC Cricket Committee, has revealed that the organization is actively exploring changes to give bowlers more flexibility regarding wides. This initiative responds to batters frequently moving around the crease, especially in limited-overs cricket, which often leaves bowlers at a disadvantage.
During the SA20 tournament, Pollock expressed concerns about the current rules, saying, “If a batter jumps across [at the] last minute, it doesn’t work out for me. At the start of his run-up, a bowler needs to know where he can bowl it.”
Challenges with the Current Rule
According to the existing ICC playing conditions, a ball is deemed wide if it “passes wide of where the striker is standing and which also would have passed wide of the striker standing in a normal batting position.” However, this rule does not apply if the batter moves and either brings the ball within reach or causes it to pass wide of them.
Pollock believes this interpretation places bowlers in an unfair position. He argued, “How can a bowler be expected to change his game plan at the last second when he’s bowling? He needs a clear idea of where he can go.”
The ICC is currently deliberating on this matter. Pollock added, “It’s in the pipeline. We’re all discussing it. We need to give a little bit back to the bowlers.”
Reviewing Wide Calls: A Divisive Topic
In some tournaments, like the IPL and WPL in India since 2023, bowlers and batters have had the option to review wide calls using the Decision Review System (DRS). While this innovation empowers players, it has met with mixed reaction billy777.
Former ICC elite umpire Simon Taufel has voiced his reservations about this practice. “I’m really conscious about turning the art of officiating into a science and seeking perfection in decision-making,” Taufel said. He warned against transferring marginal calls to the third umpire, emphasizing the subjective nature of such decisions.
South Africa’s Hopes for Champions Trophy Success
Pollock also shared his thoughts on South Africa’s prospects in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, which will be played in Pakistan. Matches involving India, however, will take place in Dubai due to geopolitical tensions.
Pollock stressed the importance of leveraging the experience of South Africa’s IPL stars in subcontinental conditions. “Players like Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, and Quinton de Kock, who spend so much time in those conditions, can only help South Africa,” he said.
Reflecting on South Africa’s performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals, Pollock remained optimistic. “We’ve got a strong core group, and hopefully, some younger players will rise to the occasion. We’ve also seen promising developments in the Test arena,” he added.
SA20: A Vital Boost for South African Cricket
The SA20, South Africa’s premier franchise-based T20 league, has been a game-changer for cricket in the country. In its third season, the tournament has received widespread acclaim for its entertainment value and player development opportunities.
Pollock highlighted the league’s positive impact: “The SA20 has gone from strength to strength. This year’s Catch 2 Million competition has added an exciting new dimension.” He acknowledged the league’s importance in revitalizing the sport domestically.
“South African cricket needed this injection. There’s no doubt about it. It’s created unbelievable interest in the game and provided a platform for talent to shine,” Pollock concluded.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s strong contingent of IPL-experienced players and the success of the SA20 bode well for the future of cricket in the country. The sport continues to evolve with these developments, blending tradition with innovation.
