Mick Lewis Becomes a Bowling Coach in Yorkshire

After his previous Essex head coach, Anthony McGrath left for Headingley, Mick Lewis, a former seam bowler from Australia, has been named the new men’s bowling coach at Yorkshire.

Prior to Yorkshire’s preseason trip in Abu Dhabi in March, Lewis, 50, will start his post at the end of February after agreeing to a three-year contract with the team.

A Thrilling New Position at Headingley

“I’m thrilled to be joining Yorkshire at what is such an exciting time for the club,” Mick Lewis said, expressing his excitement about the new position. “I can’t wait to start and am excited to work with a fantastic group of bowlers to help them succeed in Division One.”

Lewis is especially eager to work with up-and-coming players like Ben Cliff, George Hill, and Jafer Chohan and gifted bowlers like Ben Coad, whose record speaks for itself.

Prior Coaching Experience

Lewis was Victoria’s lead bowling coach before joining Essex, where he was instrumental in the team’s four Sheffield Shield victories. Working with the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League also gave him invaluable experience.

With a 14-year playing career, Lewis offers a wealth of knowledge and expertise to Yorkshire’s coaching staff. He took 460 wickets in all forms during this period, including 11 in nine Australian white-ball matches.

Lewis famously made his final ODI appearance in 2006 against South Africa in Johannesburg, when he had a challenging game and let up 113 runs in ten overs. Despite this, he is renowned for his significant contributions to cricket in Australia.

The Accolades of Anthony McGrath for Mick

The inclusion of the seasoned coach to the Yorkshire lineup excites Lewis McGrath, who collaborated with Lewis at Essex.

“Mick will undoubtedly add incredible value to all of our bowlers, who I know will benefit from his vast wealth of bowling knowledge,” he said, adding that he would bring a wealth of experience to the post.

His record is visible, and the fact that we got Mick to Headingley is evidence of our club’s aspirations. We had a great time together in Essex, and I’m hoping we will have even more success here in Yorkshire.”

Yorkshire’s 2025 Aspirations

Yorkshire Cricket’s general manager, Gavin Hamilton, welcomed Mick Lewis to the team. “Everyone at Yorkshire is thrilled to have Mick in his new position here,” he said. “He has a remarkable track record of turning out bowlers of international caliber.

I do not doubt that his hiring will thrill our present group of bowlers, who are already eager to work with him further. We are confident that his addition to the coaching staff will immediately improve our performance and position us for success in 2025.”

Mick Lewis’s arrival significantly boosted Yorkshire’s aspirations for the forthcoming cricket season because of his track record of producing elite bowlers and his intriguing future.

As they prepare for Division One cricket’s demands, the bowlers may anticipate taking advantage of his extensive knowledge and experience.
