What are blood groups?
Blood groups are genetic markers that can tell you something about yourself. If you go in for blood tests often, there’s a good chance you’ll get curious about what they mean and that’s where we come in!
At our blood testing lab in Pakistan, we offer blood group and Rh factor testing so you can see exactly what your results mean. Here’s how it works: Blood is taken from a vein or artery. Then red blood cells are separated and centrifuged so their antigens (which make up ABO) can be identified.
Four major blood types
There are four major types of human blood—A, B, AB, and O—and several rarer types that may have some of these components in them. Each blood type is determined by antigens found on each red blood cell’s surface.
If you have one antigen, you’re considered a member of that blood type’s ABO subtype; if you have two antigens (like most people), you’re considered that type plus its AB subtype; if you don’t have any antigens at all, and you’re an O-negative person.
If both your parents were O-negative, their kids would be O-positive but would not inherit either antigen from their parents’ genes.
The ABO system of classifying blood types is so familiar that we sometimes forget how complicated it is! Type A, for example, is a combination of two separate systems: one for determining antigens (called the A antigen) and another for determining antibodies (called B).
But things get even more enjoyable if you’ve got an O type—meaning you’re missing both those markers. O types can be divided into five subtypes depending on which combinations of antigens they do or don’t have (anti-A, anti-B, anti-C, etc.)
How the Test is performed
When you book your online blood group and Rh factor test, we’ll take a small blood sample from an arm vein or finger prick. Our staff will perform all lab work in our state-of-the-art facility using an advanced Automated System with Fully Integrated Barcode Labeling (Bar Code).
Most patients see results within 24 hours after their sample is collected; however, results can be obtained faster if necessary.
How are they tested?
Blood samples are collected by technicians or phlebotomists (who draw samples for lab testing) using needles or non-intrusive collection devices. Blood tests are painless and can be performed on virtually any part of the body, except for areas that have had radiation treatment in recent months.
The technician or phlebotomist will apply antiseptic at the location where they will collect a sample before taking a drop of blood with a needle, butterfly needle, or non-intrusive instrument. Afterwards, they may apply pressure to stop any bleeding and then apply gauze.
What if you have more than one group?

Why is this important?
Knowing your blood type can give you essential information about your health, such as if you are more or less susceptible to certain illnesses than others. Blood typing is also helpful for couples planning on having children: Knowing each other’s blood types gives them an idea of their chances of having a child with specific health issues.
